FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS TO ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS?

I stumbled upon a rant by a Yahoo contributor who seemed very upset at the prospect of KFC, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc. accepting food stamps. He’s not alone. There are folks out there ready to (keyboard) protest if McDonald’s lets poor people use their benefit cards to get a happy meal—with a toy even! These are the same people who seem to think being poor is a sentence, rather than a circumstance. Or that it’s somehow enjoyable to not know where your next meal is coming from. Maybe the feds should bring back powdered milk and government cheese. While we’re at it, why don’t we produce Soylent Greens (including the special ingredient)?

Sure there’s gross abuse of the system, and allowing KFC to accept food stamps seems like one of them, but if you are at a poverty level where you don’t have access to maybe even a hot plate, why can’t you get a 2 piece dinner?

Perhaps they should limit it to ‘healthier’ selections if it’s that much of an issue, but if you qualify for the benefits, I say you eat what you want.

If that means you run out of your food stamps in 2 weeks, then next month you’ll be wiser, and cop that hero and free soda from the bodega instead.

I’d much rather eat Hamburger Helper in my middle class apartment with middle class comforts, than eat a bucket of chicken and have to find a vacant bedbug infested subway bench.

Here’s the opposing perspective:

“Welcome to Taco Bell, will this be cash, charge or food stamps?”

Just when I thought I’d heard it all, now fast food restaurants want Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients to be eligible to use their food stamp benefit at selected restaurants. Restaurants such as Taco Bell, KFC and Subway believe that there are certain types of SNAP recipients who are homeless or living in conditions that do not allow them hot meals and these people would benefit from being able to use their food benefit at fast food restaurants.

Seriously?

Fresno, Calif., officials are considering legislation that would permit SNAP benefits to be used at fast food restaurants in their area. Arizona, Michigan and other parts of California already allow the practice and Kentucky is currently considering it.

I already object to the many things that can be purchased with SNAP benefits. Junk food, soft drinks, pre-packaged frozen foods and candy are all permitted under current law. This is really a no-brainer. The law should restrict use of those taxpayer-provided funds to the basic staples: meat, starches, bread, milk, vegetables and cheese. Maybe there should be even an allowance for toiletries. But, it’s a moral crime to have public aid recipients eating better then the very taxpayers who pay for their benefit and a sad reflection of just how far this sense of entitlement has penetrated into our society.

There have been too many times that I watch someone in front of me at the checkout lane pile steaks, roasts and even lamb chops into their cart and then pay for it with a food stamp card. They’re eating better than me, and I work two jobs just to keep my head above water. And, the last time I went grocery shopping, the person even had a birthday cake from the bakery in the cart as well. All paid for with food stamps.

Soon middle class workers will find themselves driving home from work to eat a box of Hamburger Helper because payday is still a week away and the money is gone. Meanwhile, Joe Homeless person is standing in line at KFC waiting for his bucket of original recipe chicken, hot biscuits and two sides. Oh, and he can super size his soft drink too. [SOURCE]

  1. FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS TO ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS?: I stumbled upon a rant by a Yahoo contributor who seemed very upse… http://t.co/Tpdsy4P

    • Instead of trying to run the life others, why not be thankful that you are in a position that you dont have to rely on assistance to feed your family. We know what it is like to have to go to food banks to feed your family and receive food stamps. where the Money is spent and how the money is spent is nobody’s business but the receivers. I am not saying McDonalds is the greatest place to eat but, who are we to judge what others do? Just because we pay taxes does not mean we get to decide where it goes! really, come on people.

      • Koku says:

Exactly!! People are so quick to judge, but everybody’s circumstance is different.

        • Arcyne says:

I totally agree. i mean, i’m currently using food stamps, i was kicked out of my house by a stepfather who didn’t like me for the simple fact that i wasn’t his son. And this was at the age of 14! Should i be banned from using my food stamps to enjoy meals that i would normally be unable to eat alone? That guy needs to take a walk in other peoples shoes before he opens his damn mouth.

          • Publius Mentis says:

The problem isn’t with food stamps. The problem is with food that is poison. McDonalds, which I ate today, is tasty, no doubt about it. But that’s because its designed to be tasty. McDonalds makes billions of dollars off of what can only be considered a snack … not a meal. You will die if you eat enough of their food.

Moreover, the only reason Mcdonalds is cheap is because of the corn subsidy. The cows are fed corn because it is cheaper than the cost to produce corn and because it fattens them up. The corn makes the cows produce a mutant e.coli to break down the corn, and because of this they deficate more. The deficated e.coli sometimes gets mixed with rain runoff and goes into neighboring crops. Remember those cases of lettuce and spinach salmonella poisoning … that was from cows fed corn.

          • julie says:

REALLY? Yes you should have to spend those foodstamps on good wholesome food from a grocery store! You should not be allowed to use tax dollars- which is money SOMEONE ELSE earned to eat at reteraunts. THAT guy is probably tired of people like you -who feel ‘entitled’ to free food at resteraunts on someone elses dime!!!

        • roler says:

          you’re right beautiful

      • Charlotte says:

This is so true cathy. If’s nobody’s business where it’s spent. And as 4 some ppl not being in shape 2 fix a hot meal, that’s true also. Let em have a hot, decent meal…I’m concerned about my own life…not what others are eating..

    • deedeejune30 says:

I hate when people think like a fool. So you are aganist the whole food stamp and fast food thing, but until you walk in someone else shoes, SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You dont know what they are going through or have been throug. I remeber when hurricane Rita and Katrina hit the south, the surviors of the storm were able to buy hot food from different resturants, keep in mind that those survivors lost their home and personal possesion, so they didnt have anywhere to cook their food. Grow up people, we are the land of opportunity,(remeber), and we should always take care of our own..

    • Branden says:

. I receive food stamps. I make about $300 a month, I have two kids and I am disabled. I dont care where the food comes from as long as my children are not hungry all the time. Get over it. You probably have enough money to select the food you want to buy when you want to buy it and WHERE you want to buy it from! I am sick of people whining because poor people get help they freakin deserve. One day when you are disabled I hope at least one of these people dont get they help they need. Then they will understand. I have been harassed by people standing in the checkout line at miejer just because I need the state assistance. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE GET OVER IT!\

    • Terry says:

I have twin boy’s & a daughter, lost my job 2 months ago, my wife left us , lost my house & my car moved in with my 63 year old mother on ssi, I just got help wth food stamps, should I not get the help or what, (sorry kids but we’re not eating today because some idiot thinks we shouldnt gethelp with food)!!!!!

      • julie says:

i dont begrudge you food- just food in fast food rest.!!

and by the way I am in a wheelchair and work too, it can be done- go to school- if your that poor school is free-quit being happy taking handouts!!! You need to get a backbone and realize you are part of the problem!!

    • zach says:

what in your little tiny self centered head would make you think that all food stamp recipients sleep on a bench? what makes you think we cant eat at the places you do? you have serious problems and should worry about yourself rather than everyone else and where they eat! hope you crash and burn one day and feel the effects of trying but not able to make it!

    • You people are idiots says:

I can not believe the ignorance of these comments. Suggesting that every family that needs assistance is living on a park bench and is taking advantage of the system or lazy. Just proves you have no education what so ever. Clearly if you have time to write about something you have never experienced, then you could find yourself homeless one day. I imagine your on your work computer being paid by the hour while you sit and use company time to place your idiotic judgements online. That is steeling by the way. 6 years ago I was single and making $100k a year. I knew food stamps were in no way going to be a part of my future. Well, guess what! Now I have 5 children 5 and under and my husband died in the line of duty! I work 40 to 60 hours a week now but with little ones I don’t have the luxury of not having a flexible job, it doesn’t pay as well. After I buy winter clothes, pay all of our bills and daycare. There is nothing left over! So as a single mom raising 5 kids alone. I deserve a night off from cooking! I seriously doubt any of you eat healthy every single meal ever single day. If someone qualifies for assistance through the State, mind your own business! This site should be removed. To many idiots! K

    • privy2most says:

I generally don’t commmit or reply to these post. However, never have I been so offended with the many commits about people receiving public aid. I am currently receiving food stamps. It is a very humbling experience!! And also a huge blessing! I am 40 and have not received food stamps all my life. I am a tax payer, I am alos an American, & I served in the U.S. Army Reserve (yes.. Veteran).
I have serverd this country to the best of my abilities to the point that I have layed down my life! How dare anyone suggest what I buy to eat, or where I feed my family!! My family, which all work yes.. Mother, father, 10 aunties, 18 uncles, all working people……….so lets just look at it like this.: my family takes care of me, with their tax payer dollars. How about that!!!

  2. charity says:

Hell no! fast food restaurants should not accept food stamps period. The meals are void of any real nutrients, and it helps further obesity. I think that people should have the right to eat want! but damn have your own money instead the tax payers to pay for it.

    • JoHn says:

If restuarants want to accept Food Stamps then they can close them and open up a grocery store.

      • kiesha says:

I find it funny how u ppl could be so ignorant! i have a 2 year old son and when im out running errands far away from home and he say’s “mom, eat eat” you want me to go to the grocery store, then go all the way home and cook! Wtf does that sound like? when i can go to mcDonalds and get him a happy meal with freash apples and milk? Lmao! think about what ur typing before you say it!

        • julie says:

oh please take an apple with you for christ sake!! PLAN- take him a peanutbutter sandwhich- your so ignorant you can’t pack a lunch? OR JUST SO ENTITLED?

      • annis says:

Ok you uneducated jackass. First of all I worked all my life, and paid my taxes. It so happened I ended up disabled. Trust me my life goal was not being on food stamps. There are alot of hard working people that are on food stamps, like some of are military men and women are on food stamps. So before anyone judges educate yourself first. Food stamps are not just for the poor people, there for hard working people that do not make that much money, and they pay there taxes.

        • julie says:

no they do not pay taxes- they get earned income- another free handout!!!! What happened to bettering yourselves and not being happy taking foodstamps??

    • Kat says:

What about like in our case we were in the children’s hospital with our daughter for over a week we had to live on pop and chips, because that is all the stores close to us had. I would have been grateful for mcdonalds. I think it should be limited to a certain amount but there are cases where it would have been very helpful. I would love to be able to pay for our food with our own money, but there are no jobs to be had and we are trying. we are still putting in applications every day because we are desperate to get out of the situation we are in.

      • Troy says:

How do you have a computer and internet access? If you have time to be on the internet, you have time to cook a meal. if you can afford a computer, you can afford a hot plate, or microwave.

        • Koku says:

I don’t agree w/the point you’re trying to make, but technically one does not have to “afford” a computer anyway. Libraries offer free computer and internet access.

        • jay says:

I think they need to found other things to do with time, then worry where I eat. What’s wrong is that 50 million blacks have been shut out by the economy. There not hiring blacks no where. It sad that every foreign race can come leap frog us. Its not because were lazy or that we don’t have a plan for success. They hate the thought that we can live in the same community or drive the same car work the same job and this is a new one eat the same food.

          • julie says:

That is so stupid it defies an answer- every day in school there are plenty of black people sitting there, improving themselves with me- sounds like you have a lot of excuses as to why your a lazy mooch.

        • Andrew Randall says:

It’s funny you say that, I not sure if Troy totally understands what he was saying. In these times most of the employers that are hiring will tell you to apply online like McDonald’s, Walmart Burger King etc, that nowadays to be around a computer job hunting is whereyou just might have to spend most of your time and only going out for interviews.
But let say that didn’t even matter, these fast food restaurants through away tons of food everyday. Wouldn’t it make more sense sale the food? Doesn’t the less fortunate deserve a convenient hot meal or must they just suffer through this ordeal because that’s what the poor are suppose to do? I understand that their are people who abuse the system and misuse our tax dollars but a vast majority of people who have food stamps would rather not have to depend on them.

        • Hellraezer says:

I am homeless. I know, all of you are rolling your eyes. I lost my job at a computer firm due to an injury. Shortly following, I broke up with my girlfriend and we no longer had an aprtment. I receive EBT benefits and the only other source of income I have is freelancing as a computer consultant, which pays just enough to keep me sane. I bought a laptop for $200 on eBay because computers are what I do. As far as internet access, I’m wondering if you’ve ever heard of this magical thing called WiFi? I do NOT however have a house to live in.
Because I have no home, and am indeed poor, does not make me any less human than you, or maybe since I’ve lived in a more stressful environment and can show compassion and understanding of other people, it makes me in fact MORE human. I know what it’s like to be with and be without.
We all have our problems, and poverty is a condition that appears to not be getting better, and is in fact an epidemic in America. When you really think about it, EVERYONE is a paycheck away from becoming homeless themselves. I only hope if any of you who are eating your next $50 a plate meal at that fancy resteraunt, and you see an individual less fortunate than youself, you choke on that $25 steak
I have no microwave, and have no means to cook a meal, but I must spend even what little money I do have on hot food, To be able to eat hot food like a normal individual is a grand treat for me when I do have the money. Just because you can have your $50 meals doesn’t make me less than you are, just less fortunate.

    • lauri says:

I pay taxes just like everyone else! But am a single mom and on Food Stamps, if I did not have them I guess we would not eat! Is it so horrible to take my kids out to eat everyonce in a while? NO! So why don’t you get over it and use your own damn and I will use my food stamps!

    • zach says:

some of us are tax payers who have lost thier job so if we want to eat there, we payed for it thru taxes, we can eat there too! greedy bitch

  3. Mia P says:

Who care if that is what they have to use to get food for themself and family go for it. And I work everyday and I see people with foodstamp buying things I can’t afford but I don’t care and I will pay taxes to the day I die so get over it and maybe if we help people get jobs so many people will not have to relie on government asst.

you gov does it for the kids !

  5. Nan says:

I have mixed feelings about this. I totally disagree with the person who wrote the “opposing perspective”. That individual sounds like an elitist with an overly-inflated sense of “why not me?” entitlement attitude. I’ve been on both sides of this argument. “Opposing”s anecdote sounds like the typical neocon “welfare queen” argument. There may be some SNAP individuals who take advantage, but $3.33 a day – to cover 3 meals – doesn’t go very far. Trust me!

When I was in a position where I was forced to collect food stamps, I had to carefully budget and figure how many days worth of dinners I could get out of each package of meat. After I got 30 days worth, then I added in starches and vegetables, until the “money” ran out. I HAD to make the food (the stamps bought) last for the whole month – I was feeding my son, my disabled husband and myself, and my part-time job’s (in farm country) income had to cover rent, utilities, car maintenance, and medical co-pays.

For a homeless person who has no other options, SNAP for restaurants makes sense – as long as the individual is careful. It MAY cover one meal a day. But that one meal could mean the difference between life and death. In this economy, there have to be options to keep people alive. This SNAP option may be one of them.

    • Koku says:

Thanks for sharing, Nan. This is the discussion I’ve been having all day. The Yahoo contributor is definitely trying to resurrect the Welfare Queen caricature. I have no problem with the SNAP program; I think it’s a blessing for most of the people it serves.

    • julie says:

oh please- a homeless guy can go in a grocery store and get 2 cans of potted meat and a loaf of bread for about 1.50- granted its storebrand bread- but that will be at least three meals, homeless people are not ‘owed’ a hot meal.

  6. http://t.co/UU1JGYs Fast food restaurants may start accepting food stamps?…..Do people have to choose free food…over health?

    • LG says:

It’s about raising a family AND working or looking for work on a low income. Not about free food. It’s about having options and not being forced to stay home always.

  7. Brian says:

Pathetic. Use the money you earn to buy luxury items. Eat bread, cheese, meat, veggies and other foods alike. Don’t use my hard earned money or time to help your fix. These are the people I think are petty pathetic losers. If you want something work hard to get it. Don’t tell me you can’t. I don’t care where you grow up, it’s your own culture that holds you back then. Be it a hill billy or ghetto I don’t care. You get the staples for food, not fast food. I work 40 hours and barely get to eat out. I don’t get welfare, I barely make it. Yet you can spend my money. Whatever losers.

    • josh says:

      its not all about you

    • jay says:

Hey brian there are more white women on stamps then blacks.lol so beforeu rant just look tha t up for me.mind your bizzness the same way we do about who y’all hire knowing that we are qulified for the job more than half the whites that are being hired.

    • Brooke says:

      You are an arrogant jackass.

    • Amanda says:

I work a full time job, I’m in school full time gettin my master’s degree and i receive food stamps. the way i see it, I’m paying taxes and therefore paying for my own food stamps. i should be able to eat whatever I want from where ever I want as in between work and class I don’t have time to go home and prepare a meal. How about instead of worrying about everyone else’s life, you nay-sayers get your own?

    • liam frosty says:

      your a jackass

    • julie says:

no doubt-shes right- hardworking people have a right to eat out- if you cant afford it get a better job, go to school- do SOMETHING to better youself!

    • Hellraezer says:

oh boo hoo. Help our fix? Guess what jackass, I’ve worked 60+ hours a week and after rent and bills were paid, we hardly ever got to eat away from our apartment.
If you’re having such an issue with “barely getting to eat out” yourself, why don’t you receive food stamps as a supplimental source of income, or do you just have your head too far up your ass to do so? If this is the case, I’d suggest that you good sir, go take a long flying leap at the moon.
And he has the nerve to call EBT users pathetic when he sits there and whines that he hardly gets a chance to eat out of his home and doesn’t do anything about it. If you don’t like paying taxes for these programs either A: quit paying taxes, B: quit your job so you won’t have to pay taxes, or C: go stick your wet finger in a light socket so we can all stop listening to your ignorant banter.

  8. FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS TO ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS? http://t.co/XIHhJgN #TwitterNewsChat

  9. James says:

Why can’t they use their food stamps @ restaurants…..? everybody that’s have SNAP benefits are not poor & have just fallen on hard times…. I believe it would be nice for them to be able to use it @ restaurants……

    • Nicole says:

Exactly. and if they decide to use their all of their food stamps in a restaurant and have nothing to eat for the rest of the month, that will be their fault and will hopefully show them that they should have spent their food stamps wiser. Also, if they don’t allow ppl to spend their food stamps in a restaurant, most people will still eat unhealthy because all they have to do is go to a grocersy store and buy a bunch of junk food or even a bunch of things like burgers and bags of french fries and even pizzas or hot pockets, and they’ll be in the same boat as the people that can use their food stamps for McDonalds. I get food stamps and I have learned that budgeting is the way. I’m sure that tax payers are upset with how the money is spent but if taxes weren’t taken out of paychecks, I bet not even half of these people would help families at shelters or other places with food for the needy.

  10. Teresa says:

Sorry but some of us do work and get stamps! I work two jobs and receive benefits. Don”t make it seem as though all of us are sitting on our butts waiting on checks and stamps! I admit some are but can”t assume that about everybody. I deserve to treat my children and I sometimes, what”s wrong with that?! I pay taxes , thus I pay for my own stamps!

    • marc says:

Unless the taxes you pay, broken down monthly, equal your monthly grocery bill or greater, then you are still getting taxpayer money… not just your taxes back. And if you are a member of the working poor, such as myself, then you get most of your taxes (sans sales tax) back at the end of the year, if not more. So don’t play that card.

  11. Don Scott says:

It astounds me how people make assuptions and then accept those assumptions as facts. To assume that all of the poor in this country have not contributed to or earned the right to be supported by the social services/welfare is not only arraogant, but short sighted. I started working and receiving a paycheck at 10 years of age in the early 60′s. I have also been a police officer and served my nation in the military. But, I have also had the misfortune of being afflicted with many ailments as a result of that service and now most of my subsistence is from social security disability and SNAP. Are they proposing that I should not have the ability to treat myself to a cheeseburger and fries or chicken meal once in awhile, just like most taxpayers do? Do I lose the right to make that choice? Why did I serve my country in the military for? Of course, I would still be responsible enough to realize that the SNAP assistance has to last me for 30 t0 31 days. But what if I want to eat cold cuts for a month so that I could treat myself to Boston Market once every other month? Until you consider all the facts and have walked a mile in my shoes keep your narrow minded attitudes and stupidity to yourself.

  12. “@eartheats: Should Fast Food Restaurants Accept Food Stamps? (via @blackgirlfit) http://t.co/m3Z9mfz” Idk, I think I’m with the other guy.

  13. Blaze says:

No simple and plain….don’t act like this is something new…you can’t go into a grocery store and get hot deli items so why in the hell would they allow you to go to a fast food place and be able to use them?? Plus we all know that would really set a poor health standard….sorry, buy the food cook the food….

    • DannyK says:

Once again making wild assumptions about the circumstances of a homeless person in the winter being able to cook.

    • JoHn says:

Many store owners will accept food stamps for hot food, but they make sure no one else is in the store. I was at a check-out and the lady in front of me had fried chicken, but she gave the store owner a twenty dollar bill, and he set it aside and took me before he rang up her order. He was waiting for me to leave, so he could accept her Food Stampd Debit Card.

  14. Black Barbie says:

In CA, there are some fast food restaurants that are eligible to accept food stamps. Although it may seem like a contradiction to the “healthy food” movement, some recipient families are homeless and do not have access to cooking or to refrigeration/storage facilities. Some families live in areas considered “food deserts,” areas where fresh produce is difficult to find, over-priced, or of poor quality.

From what has been published to date, not all fast food restaurants will be eligible to receive food stamps, only those chains that offer “healthy” or relatively healthy options.

When you consider what poor, homeless, transient families go through to meet their daily needs, offering “healthy choices” from a fast food restaurant may be a part of the solution.

    • Koku says:

      I agree w/all of this.

      • babyboomer says:

Use your heads here…what is the real problem? And what is the solution.

Stop talking about it and do something, um, like maybe WRITE TO YOUR THE GOVERNMENT! A simple letter should you need to know how to do it.

That’s what will get poor ppl off the streets or better yet, go out and help those people. Duh!

  15. Jocelyn beverly says:

This is just pure insanity. We need to be teaching healthy eating. We wonder why are kids are so overweight and have major health problems. I am speechless on this. Well no I am not. I will be back to rant once I get my speech in order.

    • babyboomer says:

Your kids are over weight because of what the government allows in your food. It is fact that High Fuctose Corn Syrup is very fattening and is almost all your products. And the Growth Hormones they inject in to animals these days is why your generation is more developed in body and fatter than ever.

    • Adam says:

I want to rant a little too! I understand people get in a slump, and have tough times. Maybe they lost their job, or maybe they had a few unexpected children. Or maybe its hard to find a job when there isn’t many jobs to be found that pay enough to live, well atleast with a little comfort. Our economy is shit, nothing is getting better, and those already on any type of assistance may be there for some time.

I understand that people have the right to live, and should not have to starve because of our economy, or hardships that arive in their lives. Even if they are dissabled, or if they have been on welfare for their entire lives. It doesn’t matter, everyone has the right to eat. Welfare is a system designed to help those that need help. The system was designed to keep people in homes, food, warmth, electricity, and running water. Take away all government assited help, think of how many homeless our great country would have.. When I filed bankruptcy a while back, fast food resteraunts expences was considered Entertainment expences. If I needed to cut back on entertainment, I had to assept not going to fast food restaraunts anymore, and eat at home from now on. Now, the government has gave you a place to live, keep warm, running water, and food to eat. Should they now pay for entertainment???!!!

Fast food chains should not be accepting food stamps! Ive heard stories about not having time to eat at home, or being too busy to cook food. Its bullshit. First if you have no job, you have all the time in the world to cook, or throw somthing in the microwave. If your disabled and have no job you got time to cook at home. Theres no reason if your not working 68 hours a week like me, that you don’t have time to cook. I work 68 hours a week, and I’m lucky to even spend $25 bucks a week at the grocery store and I’m a single parent with 2 kids that live with me. I don’t qualify for any assistance cause I make too much. But if I dont work so much I cant feed my kids. Literly I can not go to fast food chains period! If I did, that would be half my grocery budget on one meal.

Before anyone starts getting overly argumentative, I have lived in your shoes. I lived on full welfare for almost 3 years. I see both sides. Frankly I wish I didn’t have to work so dang hard only to be poorer than what I was when I recieved assistance. Now I have a very hard time feeding my kids. Then, they ate like kings, never went without.

I make $40 grand a year! I have a 3 bedroom appartment. place is a shit hole, and I still struggle to keep my head above water, and take care of my family. I drive a piece of shit car that I paid cash for. I pay $200 a month to have shitty health insurance that doesn’t really pay for anything. I pay $200 a month for gas just to work and back. I pay almost $400 on all the utilities I have to pay. I stuggle to have to pay for hair cuts, food, and even my kids school clothes and $40 bucks a week for school lunches, another thing government assistants pays for, reduced lunch or free lunch at school. Having the internet is just another thing I may have to cut from my budget just to eat. Its rediculouse to think fast food chains accept food stamps. All those energy drinks that cost $3 buck or more each can be put on food stamps. So I chew tobaco, cost me $3 bucks a week, and its addictive. So are energy drinks, addictive as hell!

To sum it up.. Fast food chains accepting food stamps is not right! Its not fair! Its not what the welfare system was designed for!

  16. G-Money says:

We have carry outs and stores that allow patrons to use their benefits to buy fresh food, shrimp, fish, chicken and have it cooked on in the store. MickeyDs and others are under pressure after losing customers to a far better meal. Tillapia or filet-o-fish? Wingdings or nuggets?

    • babyboomer says:

No kidding the government is letting fast food companies make money off the poor again. Wow! what’s next, oh wait, they will tell the ppl the enconomy is changing for the better. Why, bc those companies make a profit off the food stamps. Great plan!

  17. Tia says:

Sounds like alot of hating goingbon to me.

  18. Tia says:

Typo, sounds like alot of hating to me.

    • babyboomer says:

You got it…now do you know why ppl hate anything? it’s because you have no idea who you are in this life. LMAO! So to detour yourself, so you don’t have to face yourself, you talk about other ppl and complain about everything.

  19. Jodie says:

When one is getting foodstamps it is because they are low income doesent allways mean they dont work but still i dont think government benefits should be able to be used at fast food resturaunts nor should one be able to get hot allready prepared food at convienence stores food stamps should be used at stores for food items only not prepared meals at resturaunts or stores. fast food places are not allways cheap either and more and more these days they are reducing or eliminating the 99 cent menu’s. Whats next using food stamps to buy alcohol.

  20. saundra says:

The amount of food stamps , per person, amounts to less than 50 per week, now about 5 dollars a day. Who ever wrote this obviously has never been placed on public assistance and does not have a first hand knowledge other than some assumption about individuals grocery items. Food stamps are now paid with a card that looks just like any other card and is processed the same way, unlike the days were the very notable stamps were used. There is no way this person could know how people in front of her are paying.
This may have happened ten years ago but today people are starving and children go hungry.
I don’t believe fast food should be the answer either, not because the person on food stamps doesn’t deserve it, but because the fast food giants don’t deserve it. They have lured our nation into addiction enough already , now they are luring in the government to fund their chemical preserved so called feasts. The government needs to look at funding programs to teach people how to prepare healthy meals and offer pantry kitchens for homeless.

    • Hellraezer says:

Pantry kitchens for the homeless is the greatest idea I have EVER heard. In this manner, EVERYONE will be entitled to a hot, healthy mean and therefore a healthier lifestyle!

  21. Big debate in america – FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS TO ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS? http://t.co/XDn7DtI

  22. Aisha says:

Point #1: Some people do not have an option to cook. They may not have access to refrigeration or a kitchen. They maybe homeless or transient.

Point #2: Many people on food stamps currently work or have worked in the past. Why are any of using paying into a system if we aren’t supposed to use it when we need it? Instead we are supposed to be ashamed to use a safety net that we ourselves paid into. It’s like saying, well you have a 401(k) so stop collecting social security.

Point #3: Does it matter what people spend the money on ultimately? It will still have the same fiscal impact. When a person is on food stamps its hard to talk about reducing obesity rates. Folks are thinking about buying food that doesn’t spoil and is easy to prepare. When a person is more stable then you can think about quality.

    • Nikki says:

Aisha, three GREAT points, and I was just thinking this same thing myself. Obesity is rising at a growing rate, but . . if one is on SNAP or food stamps, its rather hard to try and think about the kinds of food one is consuming. Some people do not have access to a kitchen. Its as simple as that.

  23. Becca Travis says:

I work at what some would consider a well paying job, but have a disabled husband and 4 kids. many a week im cooking beans and rice to eat on for 3 days because theres no meat left. I never eat out. cant even remember last time I did. i buy sugar flour rice pasta and beans. then i buy meat. i make too much to get help even though every week is in question. andbefore u ask i dont have cable or internet. i pay rent utilities and transportation/insurance. my kids get clothes when school starts and 50 a kid at christmas. so yeah, I have an issue with all recipients getting the access. I would not however be against recipients that are known to have issues with being able to cook having a different card that is allowed in the store deli or restraunts, including the disabled and homeless..but then again i thought we had food banks and meals on wheels for them, so…I dont know. I do kow however that i will not sit in judgement either way, for im stuck right in the middle.

    • DannyK says:

Food banks are running out of food. And not all people can even get to the food bank or store the food from there or cook it. High gas prices have cut meals on wheels.

  24. brenda campbell says:

i think if people are on food stamps make them get out and pick up trash help the disable do somethink besides just sitting on there ___ and get food stamps. like me sometimes i cant aford to get much food so we get by i can not get food stamps because i do work making 8.00 dollars a hr. i make 300. aweek so i can not get them. most people make more on unemployment then i do so stop and think about that i do do i want to work or get unemployment?? this world is going to H____ in a hand basket. what is this world coming to when welfare and food stamps is what people are on then working. we have got to get a hold on this. please

A select number of fast food restaurants considering accepting food stamps??? http://t.co/8x87Dvh

  26. Marie Robertson says:

Most of the comments on here are really good and show that people do have a good heart and know what it means to be down on your luck. As one person said everyone who receives food stamp are looking for a handout but are people who have worked or are working in low paying jobs and having a hard time making ends meet.

A lot of them are also elderly people who are on a fix income and have to decide between eating and paying rent and electricty bills. They also have to decide how important it is to get their medications and to have the food to eat with that medications. Most of those elderly, and those on disability who income is at least $800 a month only get about $10-16 a month in food stamp. They also have co pays they have to pay to visit doctors and get medications, some have at least six or more meds they have to take(medicaid and insurance do not pay for all of them either) Their rent goes, light bill goes but they have not had increase in their money for the last two years. So if these people want to get something from a fast food once in a while they deserves it.

We are too quick to judge that most of these people never ever worked in their lives, but a lot of them worked in family homes where taxes was not taken out for them and they worked for low wages. There are those who felled on hard times due to illness, loss of jobs and need help. Food pantry cannot feed everyone and everyone is not near food pantry.

  27. Marie Robertson says:

I know from experience what it is like to have to ask for help when you need it. I start working as a teenager cleaning people homes on the weekends until I finished high school and start working in an insurance company. When I was working and home living with parents I did not need food stamps or help with government but when I did need help I ask and received it until I could do better and take care of myself.

When I got a well paying job, I gave back to organizations that help the needy and not realizing that I would need their help again. When I divorced and found myself with three children receiving ss disability for them, I did received xmas items from the salvation army for them. When I got back on my feet, I return those favors by once again giving back to orgainzations that help those in need.

But now I am almost 62 worked half of my life in the medical field taking care of patients, I am now on disabilty and my income is less than $810 a month. Out of that, I have to pay for all my ultities, medications and other bills was receiving $13 a month in food stamps . But I don’t complain because I am thanking for anything that I can get and I do go to the food pantries once a month to get food and it really helps a lot. I know that there are people who get less money than I do and receives less food stamps and no food pantries is near where they can go and get food, so I know that I am blessed.

When I hear people say people need to get out and work and do anything but there are some jobs that everyone cannot do. We keep saying the young do not want to work, but that is not true either, they cannot find or get jobs because a lot of the senior citizens who really need not be working are working and those are the jobs the young people should be doing. But those senior citizens have to work just to make ends meet and to eat so I young people are left out in the cold to commit crimes.

We complain about young people being on welfare or receiving benefits but the systems makes it easier for them to do than work, at least they know if they tell who the father is they can receives child support via tanf program and work for a while to get on their feet. Some jobs even makes it easier to hire someone on the tanf program because they know the parents have to work to continue receiving benefits. So those who don’t know what these programs stop listening to those who want to stop and start calling the social services in your states and find out the truth. It is not as easy as one may think to be on these programs any more.

  28. Lisa DeGrave says:

I don’t even want to think about what my life would have been like without the assistance of food stamps to help get my head above water. It was either food stamps to help feed my kids while I was trying to find a job sit in the house with my now ex-husband who was always drunk and always physically and mentally abusive to me and the kids. And guess what? During that time, my daughters both had a birthday. I had other items in my cart one time like a box of trash bags and a box of dishwasher soap (both generic) and someone had the nerve to tell me (the cashier) you know, you cannot EAT these items? No SHIT! I still worked full-time, went to nursing school part-time….but needed to pay very expensive care for my children during this time to allow this. Now, 2 years later, I am an RN and can pay my way, and the way of others, like you claim to do. I eat hamburger helper sometimes. The other night we ate kraft macaroni and oscar mayer hot dogs. What I wouldn’t have given to be able to run through the drive through at McDonald’s after a nine hour day at work and before a 5 hour night class at school. Don’t you realize, that even though it is food stamps….they create jobs? Get off your high horse! Have you ever been there?

    • Lisa DeGrave says:

I left the abuse and raised the girls on my own while working and going to nursing school full-time….In my hurry to write this, it didn’t come out right. You have me worked up girl!

  29. Ashly says:

I think that they should allow it but they should also limit the amount you can use per month for hot foods. If a person was to get 200 of food stamps there limit should be like fifty or sixty bucks on hot food and the rest has to be cold foods only. The reason why i say this is because a person that does receive 200 food stamps can go into a mega grocery giant like walmart that claims to be saving you money but there really not and buy all meat and come out of the store with only twelve or thirteen packs of meat and then starve in the middle of the month because the meat is like 10 or fifteen dollars a pack so compare that pack a meat that is 10 that you have to go home and cook and prepare to 2 mcdoubles a small fry and a soda that is already made that’s cost is 6 dollars cheaper. Like most of you that are saying that you pay taxes and don’t want the people that receive the benefits to not eat the way that they want to eat everyone pays taxes the person that receives the food stamps could go from walmart buying food to the convenient store to pay for gas to put in there car or a clothing store to buy there children’s clothes and pay taxes there so everyone pays taxes so its like there paying for there own food so you should not have a problem with them grabbing a meal from a fast food supplier.

  30. FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS TO ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS? http://t.co/wN53Weq

  31. JoHn says:

I believe people that get Food Stamps don’t deserve them, but our Government doesn’t care since it’s our tax money that pays for it. Imagine someday ( we would have no no tax taken from us ) then these freeloaders would finally find jobs or stop making babies. Tax payers don’t buy enough groceries themselves because they have to pay for the groceries of those that ( THINK ) we have to support their families.

    • Caitlynne R. says:

You are a complete moron. Not all of us on food stamps are baby makers or lazy. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. I am only twenty six years old. I get disability but its not enough. I have a ton of medical bills and lots of medications. So your comment is so onesided. Please look at everything before you assume you know everything.

  32. JoHn says:

Families that are on Food Stamps ( means ) their children too will be on Food Stamps, when they become adults. It’s a circle they stay in and never leave. Those that leave are minor because why leave, when you can eat all you want and find some skinny boyfriend that will love you for your Food Stamps and not for your looks. He has eyes for other women, when he’s not with you.

    • jay says:

John has a problem with blacks not food stamps. Cause his comments has nothing to do food stamps.I hope ur kids are not like you because the circle of accepting blacks folks will go on another hundred years. I can accept that some races don’t like black. But can u accept you are cancerous hater. I hope it don’t spread.lol

  33. Taylor says:

I think ppl are taking this the wrong way. Joe homeless that does not have a stove 9/10 times does not get food assistance either. I have worked in public welfare (local and state) for 10 years and I rarely see this population. The ppl that live off of the streets don’t want to be “tracked” these are the ppl that live on the streets or in “camps”. 99% of the population that gets FA are ppl with homes. The homeless families live in shelters and told to “save” thier FA so when they get their own place they can stock up. These ppl are given donated meals through the shelter. The single men/women shelters provide 3 meals a day.

I also received FA before I got this job and I worked full time was in school and had 2 kids yet I still got 300 each month. Those “frozen” meals are great for when you come home and dont have time to cook a full meal.

I oppose ppl being able to go to a fast food resturant with their SNAP card because Fast Food is a Want not a Need. Many grocery stores (at least in OHIO) sell cooked foods that are in the cold case that can be bought with FA cards. They have microwaves to heat these up. I’m talking about Ribs, Chicken, fish. They also sell fresh sides (some need to be heated and others dont). So go to the Grocery store and get your food.. after all that is why they are there.

I just dont think it is right and dont understand how the FEDS approved this in some areas and not the whole country. You can’t pass “state” laws about this when SNAP or FA is a Federal program. They would have had to get a waiver from the FNS.

  34. dan says:

i have paid into the system for 32 years , and this is the first time i have needed to use food stamps . i am grateful that there are programs in place to help those in need, regardless of the situation which requires an individual to get ebt benefits. anyone in the desperate dilemma of having no food and not having enough money to buy it would certainly never cry foul about others buying higher priced items than what someone who is working could afford. you just have to be there to understand how scary and depressing not knowing where your next meal will come from is. do i mind having paid taxes for so long before using these benefits ? not at all. when finally i needed them myself, they were there to help me and there there was never any shame implied, nor did i feel any shame; rather, just a sense of relief and security that the system worked.

  35. Jaylinne says:

Ok, so Fast food places are not the healthiest thing to eat, but if a hard working single parnet ( who is also paying taxes) needs to receive food stamps, and on a weekend after a long hectic week, would like to treat his/her kids to Mcdonalds, Taco bell, Burger king, or KFC (hope i dint miss any) why not? what is the issue with that, so just because they can barely survive off there check after rent and bills, their kids are not allowed to receive a “treat” once in a while. Just like all things this should not be abused (but of course lazy people will abuse it). I dont think it is the worst idea but i do think that limits should be set. such as this is only available on certain days or you can only use your EBT card for fast food twice a month. their should definatly be limits.

  36. SiS says:

I will no longer go to the restaurants that accept EBT cards. This is wrong for these companies to take in money from our government. If you are against it too, boycott these restaurants. Maybe they will get the message.

  37. akasha0717 says:

I do not have a problem with food stamps. It saved my family last summer when both my husband and I were out of work. I just wish we were educating more people on the nutrition value of food. Fast food is overpriced and has no nutrients whatsoever. There are plenty of studies out there about the obesity epidemic linked to fast food. Also the chemicals they put in all of those foods are soooo addicting. As a nation there should be a huge push to educate people in eating healthy fruits and veggies. I am by no means saying close every fast food joint down. I have spent the past month educating myself and teaching my family about eating healthy. We were all fast food junkies. We have not eaten any of it or had any soft drinks in a month. I have already lost 15 pounds, and my kids behaviors and attitudes have changed. I thought it was more expensive to eat healthy and spent years saying that. What I found out is it is actually cheaper to go get the veggies and fruits cause they actually fill you up more than the greasy hamburgers from fast food joints. It is hard to change something you have been doing for years and letting people use food stamps for fast food will only continue to harm people’s health when they need to be the most healthy dealing with all the economic issues they have. It is also very overwhelming to try to change habits you have been doing for years. It is far easier to go get a hamburger after a long day of work, than having to come home and fix a healthy meal. I have battled weight my entire life and most of it was eating fast food. I have had weight loss surgery only to lose 80 lbs and then returned to gaining it again. My husband and I watched forks over knives, and fat sick and nearly dead and they were amazing documentaries that really inspired us to change our behavior. I actually want to get to a point I am growing my own food, so I know exactly what I am putting in my body. Food stamps are an important lifeline to some people, I just wish they would educate people more instead of going this direction. If you follow the money trail I am sure the food stamps being allowed at fast foods, you will find someone getting rich off of it at the vulnerable people’s expense. (just my theory)

  38. babyboomer says:

OMG! I can’t believe someone is worried about a child getting a toy in his Mickey D box with food stamps!

First let me tell your brown little behind this….it is proven that most of the population on food stamps are black. Its also most of the prison population.

Secondly, the generation under the babyboomer (i am a babyboomer) better start worrying about the generation who is going to foot your thinks I deserve because I’m alive ass. They are even worse then your generation. They will be footen your Social Security. I bet you didn’t know that did you.

Thirdly, I like black ppl, they take care of there families the respectable way, it’s white trash and black trash I don’t like. Then your mixing together having little trashes that just keep piling up. Now did it take this to get you to understand the problem.

Fourth, Do you even know why the government created Welfare in the first place? Hmmm, I’ll wait while your lazy ass googles it! it seems to be all most people under 45 know to do text and google. Gosh, what would happen if you didn’t have access to all of that, I wonder, figured it out yet.

Fifth, You should be a bit more grateful due to your ancesters. They went through a lot knew what hard work was and your generation now thinks there intitled.

Do you even know what The Emancipation Proclamation is…Hmmm, waiting while you google again. Let me help you, and by the way when you read it you should be more grateful and appreciative.

On September 22, 1862, Lincoln announced that he would issue a formal emancipation of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union control by January 1, 1863. None did return and the actual order, signed and issued January 1, 1863, took effect except in locations where the Union had already mostly regained control. The Proclamation made abolition a central goal of the war (in addition to reunion), outraged white Southerners who envisioned a race war, angered some Northern Democrats, energized anti-slavery forces, and weakened forces in Europe that wanted to intervene to help the Confederacy.[2]

Just a mere game of the government that freed those ppl….a political game….same as it always was and will be…humans are just a political game that is until you do what we did in the 60′s get off your ass’s human up and do something about it instead of putting up blogs and whinning like babies. Stop sucking your Fuc**** thumbs, using your damn cell phones, playing video games, texting someone elses ass.

  39. babyboomer says:

STOP…please all of your whinning and complaining. All Americans seem to do today.

Get up off your computers and fix the damn problem. What do you do when you have a bad hair day. You fix the damn shit. What do you do when you get a flat tire, you fix the damn shit. What do you do when your dirty, you get in the damn shower. What do you do when you need to pay a bill, you work your ass off.

Now lets try this one more time…

What do you do when the government allows woman to keep having baby after baby to stay on welfare?
And what do you do with the woman who keep pumping those babies out?

Should I explain it…let me please…to the first answer write to your government as I have…stop complaining about it and do something. Its the governments fault anyway, they are the ones who should mandate the and control the problem.

To the second question… use damn protection, is it really that hard? Must be or there wouldn’t be so many on Welfare just taking a free ride.. and by the way most of the ppl on welfare are driving very nice cars.

    • jay says:

Other races have been getting help for years just not in the form of food stamps. Its called loans that come from the banks. I work in I pay taxes but I can’t walk in the bank in get a loan or get a better job because the owner is a family friend. We are talking bout food I didn’t know americans worry bout food so much. It took 400 years for whites to give us humans rights it might take another 400 years to understand poor people need help.

  40. Jennifer says:

I am on food stamps, they save my life right now. Without them my husband, my kids, and myself wouldn’t eat. I cannot thank the program enough for all that it has helped us with this past year with job loss and pay cuts.
On that note, I am outraged by this! The fact that they would even consider adding fast food as a “benefit” is sick. Aren’t obesity rates high enough already and they are going to add this in. This has nothing to do with “Those that are homeless need a hot meal.” P-lease. This has to do with “Oh crap, everyone that use to eat here can’t do it anymore because they lost their jobs and cannot afford to eat here. Our numbers are decreasing! What do we do?! I know lets take their food money because we know that those on stamps would like to treat their family to an evening out for our greasy crap mystery food.” I cannot believe that this is even an idea.
What I think needs to happen is MANDATORY education classes for those on food stamps. We have to send in paperwork showing our income and expenses every 6 month’s here in Michigan and I think that during that time you have to make a trip in to the office and learn how to eat and stock your cupboards with decent food. I absolutely REFUSED to buy pop and salty snack crap food with my card. And people say things like “buying chips is cheaper.” How long does that bag of chips last you? How long does a bag of apples (which are in season for 0.48 a pound) last you? Do the math. And you know what else, there are farmers markets that take EBT now, and even a local butcher. They have the same prices, and often times, better prices than your large chains. Not only are you eating healthier foods but you are supporting local business.

  41. Donna aka Grandma says:

Ok, here is my vantage point, for what it’s worth. I raised my daughter without state/federal aid. I then raised two grandsons for 17 years without food stamps. (One did receive SSI for a few years.) After 45 years of raising children BY MYSELF without asking for help from the government, sometimes working 2 and 3 jobs concurrently, I have been diagnosed with cancer. I am getting food stamps and California medicaid at 60 years of age. After working and paying into the system for the past 45 years I still feel dehumanized asking for help.

Now then, to the point here. Because of chemotherapy I cannot taste a darned thing. Everything tastes like grease – even plain rice with no butter or oil added! I am dying to taste something, anything. Also, there are times when I am simply too weak to cook. Heck, sometimes I can’t make it ten feet to the kitchen for a glass of water!

If I happen to be out at the doctor and want a sandwich or a cup of soup, should I be denied because they are sold in fast food places? I can get nowhere without someone to drive me and there are days I am just too sick to eat. When I have a good day, why not eat a burger? Sure, it’s not good for me but neither is losing ten pounds month.

I agree that people who are young and fit ‘may’ be taking advantage of the system which is why I worked so hard to raise my family with as little help as possible. On the other hand, times are tough and who are we to judge the intentions of another?

I personally cried myself to sleep on many nights when other kids in the neighborhood were having a Happy Meal and my grandsons ate tuna sandwiches and leftover meatloaf. Although they never complained, it was hard to watch. I knew they would have loved to go with their friends, but the money just wasn’t there.

So, you would deny poor children a chance to get a free toy because mom and dad can’t make enough money to afford it? Shame on you! With the economy on the verge of another debt crisis, it may soon be you. Keep that in mind when you start pontificating on the evils of fast food. One day you might be begging for a dollar burger. Mark my words – it happens to the best of us and you are not immune.

  42. Tallie says:

Wow! Unbelievable. There are millions of people who work and pay taxes. Not just you. If a foodstamp receiver is eating a better meal that you. It’s buy your choice. What you choose to eat. Back a few yrs ago I was a single mom going to college and working part time. I made sure my little family ate well. I dont agree on you judging others you don’t know their situation and you dont know if they worked before or are working and paying with their own taxes. Just because you get assistance. Doesn’t mean you can’t or dont work. The only concern i have is Will the hike up the obesity percentage.

  43. Wesley says:

I have wife on full disability, a 12 month old daughter, and I haven’t been able to work for going on 3 years, due to some health issues im having. But, we have foodstamps, me and our daughter have medicaid. What is so bad about Mcdonalds, Toco Bell, KFC, etc. accepting foodstamps? It’s called helping those families in need, not only the homeless people. God said, help those in need, and you will be blessed. So, lets not stress over the people that wants to families and homeless people that are in need of help. Be Godly people and Christians, and help those in need. We do everything we can to help people, it may not be much, but help those in need, God Bless.

I couldn’t agree more I think everyone should focus more on being godly and helping others. Even without a dime in my pocket I can always find a way to help someone. Cook or clean for someone or take their kids so they can go to school or work and save a buck or two here and there.

There were too many reply’s to read but let me first say that I spent 6 yrs. of my life in the United States Air Force. I’m an older female. I’ve worked pretty much all of my life. I’m divorced, since 1999. Ok, so some people have a problem with Fast Food Restaruants accepting food stamps. Guess what? That’s your problem. I’ve paid my taxes for all the jobs I’ve had and I’ve busted my ass at quite a few of them. I recently got fired from a good paying job because it was a hostile work environment. Every time I turned around, I was being called into the office and being told not to do what was in my job description. Lets just say that I worked at my friendly neighborhood (THE HOOD CASINO) Casino. I did a very good job and a couple of my co-workers who had done the same job (but transfered to something else) even admitted to me that I did more work than they ever did. But I still got fired because I got tired of being singled out and lost my temper a couple of times. But you wanna know what really upset me? The supervisor who terminated me was stealing from the Lost and Found items. Yet he was allowed to stay because he gave up names of other people who were doing the same thing. Here I’m going to work every day having to deal with people who have no respect for one another and doing my job to the best of my ability and they made me feel worthless. I had to use my 401k money to pay some bills and pay my rent for the next couple of months AND GUESS WHAT ELSE? The Casino denied me Unemployment benefits!!!! I didn’t bother to fight it because there are too many unscrupulous people who still work there and I would just be wasting my time. I have earned the food stamps I’m getting now and if I can’t find a job here soon, I’ll be losing the roof over my head. So, all you people who are complaining YOU NEED TO GET OVER YOURSELVES, BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT’S GONNA BE YOUR TURN. At least I’ll have a car to live in, it’s even paid off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ll eat where-ever I damn well please and if Mickey D’s accepts food stamps, that’s where I’ll eat! God Bless all those people out there who are having a hard time surviving. It’s only gonna get worse, BELIEVE THAT!

One group I have not seen mentioned here is our military veterans. My wife and I are veterans attending college both online and on campus to try and better ourselves. Our military occupations do not directly translate to civilian employment so we need additional schooling/training to be successful. The GI Bill does not pay a very large housing allowance and we currently receive SNAP benefits. I am a very accomplished home cook but sometimes I too would like to give my daughter a happy meal or other fast food on rare occasion. This is not because I am lazy but because it is a treat now and then to have a meal engineered entirely for taste. I don’t believe that anyone, regardless of health/financial status should frequent fast food establishments but sometimes it improves quality of life for young and old, rich and poor, and allows dad a few more minutes to get his schoolwork done. We live in a great nation where everyone is entitled to speak their opinion freely but I believe we should consider the individual circumstances of others before we render judgement about or against them. Thank you for your consideration.

I am a veteran as well using the GI bill. I make enough to pay for food for myself and my son on the GI bill. The fact that both yourself and your wife get the GI Bill and SNAP is BS. This means you are living beyond your means…thich is why you are having someone else pay for it. I hope you know that the GI Bill does count, and you also must tell them you get it which I bet you did not thinking it counted under educational. There is a separate provision for it. You should be ashamed. If you had like 5 kids while in mabe that is different; but only so in the fact that you may qualify with the GI Bill. It does not change the fact that you could work and choose to go to school. You want to better your life, but should have thought about that before you had a lot of kids you want everyone else to pay for. It is everyones business what someone eats with foodstamps. Why do people think they “deserve” it. No one deserves it and no one should feel entitlement. It is a nice thing to have for people…but to the above no you do not DESERVE it. You deserve nothing you do not pay for no matter what your circumstances. You are lucky if people help you and that is it.

Your opinions seem very selfish and the government chooses who gets food stamps and who doesn’t. If someone receives food stamps there must be a reason for it. They don’t just give it to anyone. You should be more upset with those who carelessly have kids with no intentions of getting a job or education or claim to be homeless when they r not and sell their food stamps for money. The father of my son makes great money working construction and claims he has no job, and is homeless so he gets food stamps and sells them for more money and for 3+ yrs I didn’t see any child support. And when child support is paid it goes to the government for the help i get.

  46. Lets just call me Joe says:

Let me start off by saying im a war vet who fought in Iraq in 2003, A volunteer firefighter, and have been working since 16(30 now)and paying taxes. I recently lost my job due to a manager wanting to go back to a sales position, so she took mine. She lied saying i quit, to disqualify me from getting any UI benefits. So i have been on Ebt/cash aid for a few months now. And in order to stay on it you have to work volunteer or job search for 35 hours a week. And when you factor that in with what minimum wage is you get less then that. To be honest i would rather work, But like many other Americans, no one will hire you no matter how qualified.

  47. Shame on people says:

I worked my tail off providing for 3 stepchildren and 2 biochildren w/no child spt help in 15 years. I literally worked myself sick. Never did I dream of an existence on food stamps, and existing is all it is. Before I applied for benefits my husband and I were homeless because he has seizures/heart problems and I was throwing up blood and couldn’t eat anything. To have to scrape together $4 a day for dollar menu items was difficult, but groceries were IMPOSSIBLE, and we had no where to put them anyway. When we did get benefits, it was spent of basics; cereal, lunch meat, veggies, etc…not sugar and crap; this diet made my health worse and I began passing out. why? I’m allergic to all grains, most fruits/veggies, processed foods, and dairy PLUS hypoglycemia. Now its nice to find out that so many of you blessed folks judge me for buying hard candy to keep my sugar leveled and we apparently don’t ‘deserve’ the occasional treat of a soda or chips for hubby. I’m on a medical food replacement formula for 3 years now because I was more concerned about being thought responsible with our snap benefits than I was about buying what was right for us. NO ONE wants to depend on the government for our existence. Poverty is NOT a choice. I had a career I loved and would give anything to work again, but that isn’t an option. My ‘lazy fun filled life’ on the taxpayer’s dime is spent knowing that I will not see 50 and will be lucky to make it to 40. GROW UP people. Quit judging others because you do not know what path has brought them to poverty. Death of a spouse, illness, and divorce are the three leading triggers for poverty….do you really think none of those three will ever happen to you???

Yeah, the homeless should have a great time trying to refrigerate all that milk and cheese she was talking about. SOme people really shouldn’t be allowed to write anything. Ever.
